Nate Marquardt knocks out Tyron Woodley to become Strikeforce welterweight champion - UFC News
Nate Marquardt, the former UFC number one middleweight contender, put forth a classic performance, by knocking out Tyron Woodley in the fourth round of the five-round bout held on July 14, 2012.
The duo co-headlined ‘Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy’ pay-per-view which was televised live from Portland Oregon, United States. Nate, 33, was entering his career’s 44th bout, boasting 31 wins.
The Colorado proud is widely known as one of the best submission specialists in the world. The former Pancrase middleweight champion, Nate, has collected 15 of his wins by making the opponent submit, nine by sheer knockout and eight by either unanimous or
split decision.
Also known as ‘The Great’, Nate, with such a hefty resume, was obviously the fan and the odd-makers favourite. From the very first round, Nate completely controlled the octagon and moved forward aggressively throwing jabs and targeting Woodley’s legs.
Tyron, 30, who was in his 11th career bout, with an undefeated streak, was stunned by the agility and lethal strikes of veteran Nate. Tyron did show great resilience but was visibly overshadowed by Nate’s power, accuracy, strength and above all agility.
Nate’s footwork aided him a lot in controlling the octagon. It was the fourth decisive round when Tyron who was almost limping after receiving a powerful kick on his leg, lost all his gas and determination and succumbed to Nate’s powerful elbow and punch
attack.
The continuous battering left no choice for the bout-referee but to intervene and halt the bout at one minutes and 39 seconds pronouncing Nate as the winner and the new Strikeforce welterweight champion.
After the bout, during a short media interaction, Tyron praised Nate for being a tough brawler, adding that he was waiting and just capitalised the opportunity optimally.
Woodley, also known as T-Wood stated, “I didn't see myself losing against Nate. I didn't necessarily try to protect my undefeated record. I didn't see myself going undefeated for my entire career. That would have been great, but for me, I just thought I
was faster. I thought that using my timing, using my hands, using my speed and using my wrestling, you know I didn't want to do a whole lot of taking down and wrestling. He was waiting on that, he was ready for that. I got a fat lip, my legs are a little sore,
he got a couple leg kicks in.”
With this win, Nate has definitely started his Strikeforce career in an intimidating manner. Tyron-win was Nate’s 32nd career victory whereas Woodley has unfortunately received his first ever loss.
