Nate Robertson fails to impress as Seattle Mariners fall to San Francisco Giants in second outing
The Seattle Mariners recently travelled to the home camp ground in Scottsdale, Arizona, to play against the San Francisco Giants. The club could not climb out of its predicament as the 2010 World Series Champions dominated the Mariners and carved a 6 – 1
victory over the club.
Nate Robertson, who was amazing in his debut appearance in Spring Training, was unable to duplicate his performance for Seattle as his team lost an exhibition match.
Robertson has been trying hard to make it to the five-man rotation but his three-innings display against the Giants has put his aspirations on hold. The pitcher gave away four hits and four runs in the game. The 33-year-old had earlier made his mark in the
debut game as he took down the competition in a two-inning shutout exhibition. The only saving grace coming in the second outing for the Mariners came in the form of Justin Smoak who ran double after a good hit by Brandon Belt.
Miguel Tejada had done the most damage for the Giants as he led a two-run triple to get his teammates through to the safe base. The runs came through due to Robertson’s silly mistakes. The non-roster player needs a good call to get him through the competition
in the midst for a starter’s role. His left arm needs more improvement if there is a chance to do more this season.
“From the second inning on, I just didn't finish off my pitches, then it was inexcusable to walk guys and both of them scored,” Robertson said. “That's pretty much it in a nutshell. A couple times I tried to come in and caught a little bit too much of the
plate. And I left a changeup there to Miguel in the third.”
In the end, a better impression will lead the pitcher to a rotation role this year. “Spring Training is a tune-up for everybody, but you have to make your impressions,” he said. “I’m not going to go home happy about [today]. But you walk off the field and
I’ve got my health. Now it’s just a matter of getting things tightened up, working on it and putting it into play.”
