Nate Schierholtz shines as San Francisco Giants defeat Cincinnati Reds 3-2 - MLB Update
Miguel Tejada hit a tying run while Nate Schierholtz stroked a leading single as the San Francisco Giants overpowered the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 to tie the four-game series 2-all, at AT&T Park on Friday, June 10.
Due to a line drive single by the Reds’ Chris Heisey in the top of the fifth inning, the Giants went under a one run deficit with 2-1 but in the bottom half of the inning, Miguel Tejada blistered a fast shot to left-field for a RBI single.
The game then remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning when pinch hitter Schierholtz entered for his first at-bat and hit a blistering shot off the Reds’ closer Jose Arredondo, who otherwise was having a brilliant last inning. With this hit,
the Giants earned their 36th win of the 2011 Major League Baseball season.
"They don't make excuses," Bochy said. "It's somebody different every day it seems like. They don't dwell on what's happened."
Before the fifth, both starters gave just one run each. The Reds’ Travis Wood gave a lead off RBI single to Cody Ross in the bottom of the first inning. The Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong successfully defended the lead with his ace pitches. In the top of
the fourth inning though, he allowed a RBI single to Ryan Hanigan.
After the fifth, Vogelsong carried his game until the sixth inning while Wood remained in the game until the eighth inning. Over his six innings spell, Vogelsong gave two runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out six batters to manage his ERA to 1.81.
Wood, on the other hand, also allowed two runs but on eleven hits, walked three, struck-out four batters and his ERA moved to 5.38.
After Vogelsong, the Giants’ relievers Jeff Affeldt, Sergio Romo and closer Brain Wilson performed as per the expectations of the manager Bruce Bochy. None of these pitchers gave any run over their one inning spell. Affeldt struck-out two batters while Romo
took three and Wilson struck-out one batter.
The Reds’ closer Logan Ondrusek allowed a walk at a crucial stage, which cost the Reds a game losing run.
"Walks late in the game will certainly haunt you," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said. "That was a tough loss. We have had quite a few of those."
According to experts, Baker, after getting his 32nd loss of the season, will re-arrange his batting line-up as he knew the Reds have some brilliant hitters in their team like Brandon Phillips and Drew Stubbs.
