Nate Schierholtz’s homers help San Francisco Giants defeat San Diego Padres 6-5 – MLB Update
Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI double in the eighth and Nate Schierholtz launched his second homer in the 14th inning, as the San Francisco Giants managed to overpower the San Diego Padres 6-5 in an electrifying rubber fixture of the three-game series
at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Wednesday, July 6.
San Francisco were trailing 5-3 from the top of the sixth inning and finally in the eighth inning Pablo Sandoval, who has scored in the first, entered for his fifth at-bat and scored an RBI double off the Padres’ starter Dustin Moseley to tie it at 5-all.
Then both the Giants and the Padres’ closer tossed perfect ninth innings to force the game into extra sessions.
The Giants’ closer Brian Wilson carried his game into the 10th inning and took out four batters over his 31 pitches of two innings. The Padres’ closer Luke Gregerson also threw two scoreless innings to take three batters and the game entered into
the 11th inning.
San Francisco brought Sergio Romo, who tossed perfectly not in this inning but also in the 12th. Then Javier Lopez came into action, utilised his unplayable pitches to restrict the Padres and took three batters to confirm his fourth win of the
season. The Padres’ Josh Spence and Ernesto Frieri both combined to take five batters and allowed four no-score hits over their three innings.
In the 14th inning, Nate Schierholtz launched a sky-high 338-feet long one-run homer off Pat Neshek to help his team nip their three-game losing streak. It was Nate’s second jack of the night and ninth of the season.
The depression the Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy was feeling after their potential third back-to-back loss released when he saw Nate coming off the ground touching a game winning grand slam.
"It's hard to have a better game than Nate did," Bruce Bochy said.
This hit also saved the Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner from his tenth loss of the season. It was a complete surprise for him, as he was sure to get this blow after allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings.
No matter how the Giants gained this win, it will definitely create some much needed confidence in their bull-pen.
