Nates Mineshaft assigned 107 Beyer figure in his Lone Star Park Handicap victory
The 5-year-old Windy Hill Farm owned, Nates Mineshaft, has been superb at Fair Grounds this season, spanning a winning streak of 4 on the trot, which included victories in Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap and Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap.
Trained by Austin K. Smith, Nates Mineshaft won his first stakes race in the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap at Fair Grounds Race Course, where he defeated the likes of Fast Alex in second by 2 ¾ lengths as he covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and
43.01 seconds, as Alma D’oro finished third on the day, and earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure.
Bred in Kentucky by Cobra Farm Inc, Nates Mineshaft turned heads when he absolutely annihilated the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap when he defeated the highly regarded, Mission Impazible, earning a massive Beyer Speed Figure of 113 on the day.
The victory was special, because Nates Mineshaft ran over the 1 1/8 miles for the first time in his career, and to earn such a huge Beyer figure isn’t ordinary, as Toby’s Corner finished third in the New Orleans Handicap.
The son of Mineshaft out of mare Angels Tearlet, Nates Mineshaft’s 4 race win streak was snapped in the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs on 4 May, 2012.
Successful Dan won the stakes race under the Twin Spires, nipping Fort Larned in second and Mucho Macho Man In third, as Nates Mineshaft turned in a dismal sixth place finish.
He returned to winning ways in the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap, where in a field of 8 older horses over a distance of one and one sixteenth miles on the dirt track. Sent as the 121 pound high weight, Nates Mineshaft defeated Get in Da House
in second and Night Party in third.
Sired by Silver Deputy, Nates Mineshaft earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 107 in his Lone Star Park Handicap.
“I thought he ran really well,” said Austin Smith, who trains Nates Mineshaft for Windy Hill Farm. “I was very happy, and he ran a good number. I’m tickled to death for the win, happy for the horse and happy for the owners.”
