i've read that nathan ablett has stopped his comeback to the AFL, so he could pursue a career in building.

i always thought that Nathan was purely carried by his team mates and by his last name. he wasn't anything special, and didnt have too much talent i didnt think. what are your thoughts on him? and his decision?

  1. I think he was a good enough player but gee it would be tough having to live up to the legendary Gary Ablett and then having to compete with a brother like Gary Ablett Jnr. Can you imagine having a brother who was always "better than you" in the same sport that you had been groomed to excel in? It would be tough within the team and tough at home, knowing that you were not mum and dads "golden boy".

I hope that he is very successful in his new career and that he proves that he has unique talent that others in his family do not possess.

  2. I reckon he's a pretty bloody talented player if that's what he can do when his heart's not really in it!!!  He had a very solid end to the year - particularly the Granny, including one of the marks of the year.

I think like Mark Waugh -  he had so much talent he looked lazy and his much harder working brother was always going to get the accolades as a result.

As he was at the end of the last year just about any team would have recruited him (what was he 21 years old or something silly) - even if his name was Brian Smith.

If building's what he wants to - good luck to him.

  3. being overshadowed by your brother, and then of coarse his father being a great player would be pretty tough to take that you cant make it like they did/do, but good on him for doing what hes doing. Hopefully it'll all pan out one day.

  4. Quitiing football, didn't come as a shock to me, but to become a builder, did shock me. I know what you mean, and having the Ablett name....must have been daunting to him. Let say, if his name was Nathan Smith....Would he have pursed a career in footy? Maybe not.

  5. thats pretty sad, poor bloke. i feel bad because his bro is so much more noticed by him and is compared alot to gary.

i hope he suceeds in the future

  6. I personally think the only talent that he lacked was the desire to play at that level.  He had issues with the whole package of playing at the highest level but I have no doubt he belonged there on his talent.

I reckon it takes a lot of guts to do what he did.  He could have gone on for several more years without being totally committed to the game which would have done no-one any favours.

  7. ahahaha... trying to picture this!

Anyway wish him all the best as a builder, pity he felt that way about not continuing on with footy!

  8. **Having watched Nathan for several years I think he has a lot of talent but it'll sadly never been seen at AFL level.  I always got the impression that he never really wanted to play AFL primarily due to all the attention that he'd get and because he didn't want to be in the spotlight.

The club looked after him as best they could but there was only so much they could do to shield him from the media.

At the end of the day there's no point him playing if his heart isn't in it.  He's won a Premiership with the cats and I guess that's enough for him.

I wish him all the best for his future.**
