Nathan Adrian conquered the top qualification spot of the Men’s 100m freestyle semi-finals on fourth day of the 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha on Thursday, June 28.
The evening session of the day included semi-finals of Men’s 100m freestyle and Women’s 200m butterfly.
The 23-year-old Adrian, who entered the semi-finals as second fastest swimmer, met expectations of his supporters by dominating the second round of the race.
With his epic pace and commendable start, he gained a comfortable lead over his opponents. He continued his overpowering efforts in the double lap event and earned his way to the finishing end as top fastest swimmer with the timing of 48.33 seconds.
His impeccable pace remained 0.15 seconds faster from Jimmy Feigen of TXLAST, who transpired on the finishing wall as second best finisher with the timing of 48.48 seconds.
Feigen was trailed by Matt Grevers of FORDAZ, who failed to make any improvement in his position and settled on the finishing blockade as third fastest swimmer by clocking a time of 48.71 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was obtained by Ricky Berens of TROJCA, who stayed 0.14 seconds slower from his foregoing swimmer and settled on the finishing wall with an effort of 48.85 seconds.
Berens was chased by the world record holder of the 200m Individual Medley and American expert, Ryan Lochte, who stayed 0.06 seconds slower and claimed fifth qualifying spot of the event.
Lochte faced tough competition from the fastest qualifying swimmer, Scot Robison, who failed to meet expectations of his supporters and ended in a joint fifth finish with Lochte for fifth position with an effort of 48.91 seconds.
The second event of the session was Women’s 200m butterfly, where Cammile Adams upset the fastest qualifying swimmer, Kim Vandenberg.
Adams demonstrated her stupendous efforts in distant butterfly discipline and qualified into the playoff as top contender for gold medal with the timing of 2 minutes and 08.07 seconds.
She was traced by Kathleen Hersey, who remained 0.54 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 08.61 seconds for second position.
Hersey was followed by Teresa Crippen, who remained full body length behind her and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 09.59 seconds.
Fourth qualifying spot of the race was secured by Vandenberg, who failed to sustain her position and submitted an effort of 2 minutes and 09.79 seconds.
