Nathan Buckley: was he really a big star?

Or was he just star struck by the magpies?

So no offence to the pies supporters out there but this is the way i see bucks:

He left the brisbane lions in search of a premiship.

*******brisbane won 3 (or was it more or less?) after he left and buckley won NONE!*******

so he did not reach the holy grail of footy because he ditched the team that drafted him.

I know he was a great player but i think he was overrated. There have been tons of better players out there; matt lyodd, lance franklin (skills wise), chris judd, ben cousins, daniel kerr, nathan brown, micheal voss, even bloody tony locket, gary ablett (snr and jnr).

I just dont think he was as good as everybody makes him out to be.

What is your opinion? Agree/disagree/ agree to an extent?

  1. On the field as a leader, Collingwwods greatest captain ever. Off the field one of the greatest role models for aspiring kids everywhere. Skillwise not one of the superstars but very very good. But I would put him, even in the last 2 years of his career hampered by injury, on my list to run out and play finals footy for the maggies. Leadership is an intangible and regardless of stats on the day when he was on the field the whole team lifted. I think you can put Ben Cousins and Brendan Fevola in the fantastically talented category but thats about it. I never saw Bucks drop his head in any game! Can the same be said about all the others on the list you mentioned?

  2. Vossy and Buckley were two of the best out there in their time. As much as people might not of liked him, if he had a good game, the whole team had a good game. I don't think you should even mention Browny, let alone Franklin. As much as I like Jonathon Brown (by far my favourite player at the moment), I think a champion is not only someone with tremendous ability, but someone who has been good enough long enough to prove they arent just a flash in the pan. And that takes many many seasons, much like Buckley played

  3. **It's only the Collingwood supporters who thought Buckley was he was wonderful.  Don't get me wrong, he was a good player but I think he was very overrated.

It was poetic justice that he not only played in two losing grand finals, but he lost to the team that he originally played for.  I'm sure Bucks must wonder from time to time, 'what if'.  I find it very amusing and have no sympathy for him.

His story would have been a lot different if he didn't play for Collingwood and if Eddie didn't love him as much as he does.  Eddie did a good job promoting both the Collingwood footy club and Nathan Buckley during his time on The Footy Show.

For me, the only thing that made seeing him win the Brownlow several years back easier was that he didn't get to win it by himself!!  He still won one though ....**

  4. strange... i haven't seen ONE collingwood supporter say that he was over-rated...

he was a good player, but not as good as the media and eddie mcguire pushed him to be

oh and btw, he was better than Franklin.

  5. Can't believe you rate Kerr, Nathan Brown and even Llyod above Buckley...

Brisbane Bears were struggling at the time though. Consecutive wooden spoons 2 years before he joined.

The Bears drafted him for the 1992 AFL season through its Northern Territory state zone. Buckley challenged the AFL draft system and sparked controversy by initially resisting a move to Brisbane. His ultimate ambition was to play in Victoria, and he felt the Bears were an undesirable career option. However AFL draft rules prevented him from playing with another AFL club and so remained in the SANFL.

He signed with the Bears for the 1993 season only as part of a deal between Buckley and the Bears that allowed him to go to the club of his choice the following season.

So he didn't really leave in search of a Premiership.

He was very good, although he got more recognition because of the fact he plays for Collingwood. If Scotty West played for Collingwood he'd have 2 Brownlows by now :)

You can't rate players on how many Premierships they've won. Grant, Harvey, West, Buckley - never won a Premiership, still excellent players

  6. Gee you have no idea how good buckley was in regards to skill.

In bucks prime he was simply awesome. I have not seen better skill ability.

Bucks did drop off in the latter years due to injury and age.

  7. nah, he is just an ordinary player, who gets way too much attention, just like nick riewoldt, both of them were one hit wonders, nothing else

  8. I see your point about the search for a Premiership and it's an interesting one. I am not sure that this was the case with Buckley who I believe really was a consistant star player (he did win a Brownlow).

I think that it's interesting to note that Fevola has turned down what I think is a fairly good contract, especially give his recent behavior. The only explanation I can find other than him thinking himself to be Adonis is that he is hoping to jump ship from the Blues in search of the elusive Premiership medal!

  9. I always thought he was overrated and it was poetic justice he didn't get a premiership and they didn't just lose 1 but 2 in a row  gee it was good to watch and hopefully the same thing will happen to the Pies this year.

  10. hold on a sec

if you rate players by how many premierships they have won,

you have to put steven armstrong and lewis roberts-thomson above buckley

however, i actually agree that buckley was overrated. i think that he played for collingwood had something to do with it, because collingwood get the most press of any club. i dont think he is worse than nathan brown though.

  11. I don't think you should rate players by how many premierships they have won. Most of the players that you mention above have either won a premiership in their career, or are likely to win one, so I'm guessing you rate players by the amount of premierships they play in? As someone said above: West, Grant and Harvey were all fantastic players and they didn't win premierships (Scott West is still playing). Buckley was a champion and he was not overrated.

  12. nathan buckley was a star im not just saying that because i love collingwood.

he was a star, his kicking was the most perfect kick  ever in the afl it was so straight and so precice. he was the best collingwood player and one of the very best.

  13. That's nice, I hope Molly gets run over by a train.. twice..

  14. sorry i disagree

you really have no idea and i feel a bit sorry for your lack of knowledge

  15. I'm a Demons supporter BUT,, I have nothing but respect for Nathan Buckley...

  16. No. He was never a big star.

He was always over rated by Collingwood fans - & Eddie McGuire. In fact it was embarrassing to watch the Footy Show when Eddie was in charge of it & Buckley appering as a guest.

Eddie used to drool & "ooooh' & 'aaaah"  to every sound Buckley uttered. Buckley was a legend in his own lunchbox!

  17. I honestly thought he was overrated as well, any thing he did was seen as super human, only Buckley could do that etc,   but he stuffed up his passes more than any champion i have ever seen, i heard the same phrase from commentators every time he was on TV,("that pass was very UN Buckley like",  if it was so un buckley like,  why did they say it every week)  when he had no one running him down there was no one better at passing a footy, but when some one was on his hammer, he'd stuff up time and time again.  I am not saying he wasn't good, but he hardly ever won his own footy, he is good to listen to on ch 7 though, 100 times better than OX, he is hopeless,  keeps saying the most stupid comments.

  18. if you barrack for "you know who", anybody in another team is famous    lol
