Nathan Cleverly beats Aleksy Kuziemski, defends WBO Light Heavyweight title – Boxing news
The British national professional boxer Nathan Cleverly has successfully defended his WBO Light Heavyweight title by scoring a technical knockout win over Polish professional light heavyweight champion Aleksy Kuziemski on Saturday.
Just under two minutes into the fourth round, the bout was called off by the referee, Mark Nelson. Denny Nelson, Carlos Ortiz Jr. and Cesar Ramos were performing their duties as judges while John Duggan was appointed as the fight supervisor.
Cleverly has been outstanding since his first-ever professional bout against Ernie Smith in 2005. He has never been defeated by anyone in his career. After this win, Cleverly has improved his record. So far in his 22 career fights, he is yet to draw or face
defeat in a match. Amongst the wins, 50 percent came through knockouts.
It was expected that the 24-year-old Cleverly will be coming face-to-face with Tony Bellow, but the negotiations broke off because his fellow British boxer was not able to gain the required weight to make the fight possible.
Eventually, Kuziemski was declared as the next possible opponent to fight with Cleverly.
Cleverly was given the warning for holding and hitting early on. However, he looked disturbed in the third round when he was not able to predict a fabulous left hook from Kuziemski. However, Cleverly recovered and made a strong comeback to finish that round.
The fight was called off in an unsatisfactory fashion in the fourth when Kuziemski was not in a good condition to carry on due to a cut over his left eye. The referee did not even consult it with the ringside doctor and signalled the bout off.
Cleverly, while speaking to media said, “I felt it was my destiny tonight. Ever since I first put the gloves on when I was 11 this was the night I've been dreaming of. Now I'll say Nathan Cleverly is the light-heavyweight champion of the world.”
It has been a rollercoaster week for Cleverly. He won on the championship night and the hearts of millions of boxing fans by staying mentally focused.
