Nathan Cleverly believes he can beat Bernard Hopkins in the ring – Boxing news
The current World Boxing Organisation light heavyweight world champion, Nathan Cleverly, reckons he has the tools to beat the current World Boxing Council and The Ring Light Heavyweight Champion, Bernard
Hopkins, in the ring.
The 24-year-old undefeated Welsh prospect, Cleverly, who holds a perfect record of winning all of his 23 professional fights, with 11 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, recently secured a majority
decision over his bitter rival Tony ‘the Wavertree Bomber’ Bellew at the Liverpool Echo Arena in Merseyside, England and he now wants to unify the division by taking on the Executioner, Hopkins.
While speaking on his inclusion, Cleverly remarked, “My dream is to become the unified light-heavyweight champion of the world.”
Cleverly claimed Joe Calzaghe, who is a former WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF, The Ring & British super middleweight champion and The Ring Light Heavyweight champion, also believes he can beat Hopkins in the ring.
Cleverly added, “Calzaghe told me myself I can beat Hopkins because he wouldn’t like my type of style. He’s been in the ring with him so he should know, and I think I’ve got a style which will give him
problems.”
The 46-year-old Hopkins, who carries a record of winning 52 of 61 professional fights (2 Draws, 1 no contest), with 32 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, is the oldest boxer ever to win a heavyweight
title. He is also considered as one of the greatest middleweight champions of all times. Therefore, Cleverly admitted Hopkins is a very skilled boxer but on the same note he stated he has got enough to beat him.
“Hopkins is a fighter who would give anyone problems, but it’s a fight that could happen,” Cleverly said.
Hopkins recently on October 15, mixed it up with the Bad, Chad Dawson, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California to defend his title but his fight ended up in storm of controversy after Dawson,
in the second round, lifted him up by the legs and threw him down to the canvas. Though WBC declared it as a technical draw, Hopkins wants a rematch with Dawson to prove himself. However, let’s see if Cleverly gets close to Hopkins and sets up a fight with
him, as their bout will certainly pull a huge crowd into the arena.
