Nathan Cleverly considers joining Freddie Roach’s camp – Boxing News
Nathan Cleverly is surely making some moves towards his professional career. He will debut against Shawn Hawk on November 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Last month, it was reported that the London 2012 Olympian will join Briton fighter Amir Khan’s
newly formed promotion. However, Cleverly switched to another promotion, leaving Khan disappointed. Now, Cleverly is considering joining forces with legendary trainer Freddie Roach, who has crafted champions out of men like Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Julio
Cesar Chavez jr.
“Freddie has said some very kind words and is impressed with my sparring,” said Cleverly, following Roach’s remarks of appraisal for the new comer.
“That is good because Freddie is a renowned top-class trainer and has worked with many of the top fighters so that is a compliment. And it means a lot to me for someone like that to say he'd train me. It maybe an option,” added Cleverly, following Roach’s
comments suggesting that the Hall of Famer trainer is willing to train the Olympian.
Cleverly sparred at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, impressing the three-time trainer of the year Roach.
“It was a great experience being at Freddie's renowned gym, it is very busy with good fighters and potential top-class sparring partners. We'll get this fight done and then we'll decide my next move whether I come out to America for training camps in the
future, which I probably will,” Nathan added.
Roach was recently fired by former WBA and IBF unified light welterweight titlist Amir Khan, following the latter’s loss to American unbeaten fighter Danny Garcia. Khan suffered the second knockout defeat of his career, and he eventually blamed Roach for
not being able to upgrade his defending skills.
Now, Roach has two elite fighters under his training, Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. As indicated by Cleverly, Roach is hoping to train the young fighter to the heights of success.
Cleverly will take on Shawn Hawk this month to prove if he is worth being a professional fighter or not. Once done with the fight, the Olympian will then move ahead with discussing things with Roach.
