Nathan Cleverly says he will consider retirement if he loses to Tony Bellew – Boxing news
The current World Boxing Organisation light heavyweight world champion, Nathan Cleverly, has said that he will consider retirement if he loses to Tony Bellew in their upcoming fight.
Nathan Cleverly and the Wavertree Bomber, Tony Bellew, will lock horns this weekend, October 15, 2011 at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London.
“I would go as far as to say if I lost I would retire. If I was to lose this fight I would definitely get out of the sport. There would be no point in me continuing,” said Cleverly.
Cleverly and Bellew both have never been defeated in the ring as of yet. Cleverly holds an undefeated record of winning all of his 22 professional fights, with 11 of them coming by the way of a knockout. Bellew on the same note has won all 16 of his professional
bouts, including 10 of his wins coming by way of a knockout. Therefore, Cleverly reckons his fight with Bellew is going to pull some crowd and it will be an explosive one as well.
“Losing isn’t an option, we are both undefeated so it would be hard to accept defeat,” said Cleverly. “Our undefeated records are on the line and that is what makes the fight interesting.”
The 24-year-old Cleverly and Bellew both were previously scheduled to fight back in May 2011 but Bellew failed to make the weight. However, they have been involved in numerous verbal fights including a pre-fight press conference, where the pair literally
came down to blows. However, Cleverly still vowed he will not lose control of his emotions on the fight night.
“I won’t get carried away because of our rivalry on the night. I have had 22 fights so I should be expected to deal with that,” he said.
The 28-year-old undefeated Liverpudlian, Tony Bellew, is the reigning Commonwealth light heavyweight champion but let’s see if Cleverly can really shrug him off in the ring this weekend.
