Nathan Fillion could be Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie, sticking closer to the game
The Uncharted film seems to be on the right track with newly appointed director, Neil Burger, singing in tune with the fans on where the adaptation of the critically acclaimed and hugely popular Uncharted series should be going.
While the project is still in the early days of pre-production, Neil Burger did admit that he had heard of Nathan Fillion and how fans saw him as a popular choice to be cast in the role of Nathan Drake, the quick witted, big mouthed, charismatic protagonist
of the series.
“That (Nathan Fillion) was brought to my attention.” Burger pointed out, “So, you know, I think he’s a good actor.”
At this point many Uncharted fans will be high-fiving themselves, though that would be premature as he went on to explain that there were other actors who could play the role of Drake (hopefully not Mark Wahlberg).
Burger tried to calm things down on the speculation front by explaining that they were still in the very early stages of pre-production and that casting was not something they were even considering at this point.
“Where we are right now is that we’re literally starting from scratch on the screenplay, and I think that once we finish it, then we’ll go to actors and see who’s available and who’s right for the parts. Whenever that happens,” he said.
So it seems fans will have to wait to see who gets the role of the ever-so-witty Nathan Drake, yet the statement touched on another very important aspect of the film adaption: the fact that Burger was working on the screenplay from scratch.
This is significant because it means that David O’Russell’s, the Director previously hired to lead the project, horrifyingly unfaithful (to the game) screenplay has been scrapped.
Burger also went on to explain that the new screenplay will be based more on the video games than on a family of treasure hunters and their relationships (what on Earth was O’Russell thinking?!).
“Mainly we’re beginning from scratch and going back to the videogame. Because there’s a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it,” explained Burger.
What will impress gamers is the fact that the for the first time in a long time the Director is, at the very least, trying to remain true to the game which he will be adapting into a film.
Burger also hinted that he wanted to use some of the more ‘intense things’ from the games and adapt them into the film, but only if they add to the story of the film.
It seems that an Uncharted movie is set to be a reality and for once it seems that the project is in the right hands.
