Nathan Gerbe scores game-winner as Buffalo Sabres edge Calgary Flames 2-1 -NHL Match Update
It was easy to see that Buffalo was desperate to snap their two-game losing streak and grab another two points, which they did as Nathan Gerbe scored the game-winner during the final period as the Sabres edged the Calgary Flames, 2-1, at the sold-out First
Niagara Center in  Buffalo, New York, United States.
Buffalo Sabres won their second matchup in the past six contests, which had given the impression that they had once again become unwilling to win after opening the season by having won five of their first six games.
"With the way things have gone, we needed a big win like this", said Drew Stafford, who gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead in the first period. "We were going through a little bit of a rough patch, some tough games, and not necessarily playing a full 60 minutes. But
tonight I thought that was a little bit different. We had a solid game against a team that has been playing pretty well".
Drew Stafford opened the scoring with his fourth of the season 7:59 into the first period.
Calgary Flames gave Buffalo three straight power play opportunities as Cory Sarich, Lee Stempniak and Tom Kostopoulos were penalised with various minors and sent packing.
The Flames on the other hand, had three straight penalties to capitalise on as well in the second period as Drew Stafford, Andrej Sekera and Matt Ellis were booked with minors for two minutes each, but Calgary failed to score on any one.
Nathan Gerbe extended the lead 1:45 into the third period, which ultimately became the game-winner for the team, followed by a goal from Alex Tanguay to finally put Calgary up on the scoreboard, but failing to equalise after that resulted in their defeat.
"You need to bury something there", Flames coach said Brent Sutter said. "We never really started doing what we needed to do until we were down 2".
Sabres play the next game in Ottawa against the Senators on Saturday, while Flames will play their last contest on the road against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday before returning home to host the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
