Nathan Green posts the best score of his season at the Travelers Championship
Nathan Green fired a five-under par 65 in the opening round of the Travelers Championship, at the TPC River Highlands, in Cromwell, to share the second spot on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
Green started off on the back nine of the course and recorded a birdie on the 10th hole, followed by a bogey on the very next hole that he played.
Thereafter, he managed to score another five birdies to settle one stroke behind the leader, David Mathis, who fired a hole-in-one at the par-three 11th hole.
The golf commentators believe that Green could have done even better if he had succeeded to create more birdie chances, especially on the front nine of the course.
Overall, it was a great score, considering the fact that he never posted a score like this before in the 2012 golf season.
“It was great out there. The greens are perfect, and it really wasn't too hot. We got a little bit of wind on the back nine. But perfect conditions,” he said.
“I just made a couple of putts. My next best goal was to play one or 2 under. It was just good to get off to a good start. It's been pretty rare the last two years, so hopefully keep it going tomorrow”.
According to Green, River Highlands is one of his favourite golf courses around the world, as it suits his style of playing.
“I do like the course. I generally like the northeast. It's such a good place to play golf,” he said. “I'm used to sort of playing on these kind of greens, and it's a course I enjoy”.
He also told that putting can play a key role in registering a good score, especially when the greens are perfect and supportive.
Green was among the early starters and also took the clubhouse lead until Mathis took his place in the afternoon.
Will Claxton and Fredrik Jacobson were the other two players to register a score of five-under par 65 each, to tie for the second spot.
A total of 10 players, including recent major winners, Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson, were tied for the fifth place after recording a 66 each.
