Nathan Outteridge, Iain Jensen hopeful for a fine finish: 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship
Australia’s Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen suffered from some troubling weather conditions on Day 14 of 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships but, somehow, they were able to maintain their sail and finished second in the overall standings at the end with
convincing scores.
The 49er fleet completed three scheduled races on the Centre course in Fremantle, Australia. First two races went well without any trouble from the breeze but before the start of Race 3, the winds started to fluctuate with heavy gusts. Due to the troubling
winds, the race committee decided to delay the third race until the forecast became favourable.
After the weather conditions finally calmed down, the 49er fleet completed Race 3. The Aussie pair clinched 10, 5 and 8 to finish on second podium place in the overall standings with 63 points. They are just two points behind the first placed team, Great
Britain’s John Pink, Rick Peacock.
Speaking to the local media at the conclusion of the day, Outteridge said, “We had to do another double session today. We were leading both races at the bottom gate but only managed to get a 10th and a fifth, it was a bit disappointing and frustrating but
at the same time they were all keepers. We got back to eighth and are really happy with this as we’re now just two points off the lead.”
Despite a troubling 14th day, the pair is hoping to minimise the Britons’ lead on the penultimate day of 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship. They have a seven-point lead over the third placed, Emil Toft Nielsen and Simon Toft Nielsen of
Denmark.
Jensen spoke to reporters and said, “We’ve had everything this week and we don’t really know what to expect tomorrow but we’re just got to go out and post a couple of top 10s and have a look and see how we’re sitting after that.”
