Nathan Robertson desires to win Olympic title before leaving international badminton
England’s mixed doubles’ ace Nathan Robertson remains assertive to win the title in 2012 London Olympics, before leaving international badminton.
The silver medallist of the 2004 Athens Olympics is working hard with his new partner Jenny Wallwork, to produce maximum results this time.
In the 2004 Olympic Games, Gail Emms partnered with Robertson. After the retirement of Emms, Wallwork joined hands with Robertson in 2009 and grabbed the position of World Number five in 2010. However, in the later part of 2010, the couple failed to perform
well in several events and slipped down to the 11 position in the world rankings.
Robertson said about his faltering performance that, “Jenny and I were up at fifth in the world last year but we've slipped down to number eleven at the moment. It's very tight at the top but it's crucial that we establish ourselves inside the top eight.”
The English couple won the silver medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, making them optimistic for the title in the 2012 Olympic Games.
The 33-year-old Robertson knows that he is on the verge of retirement and most probably next year’s Olympic Games will be his last event. He is determined to do his best to make it a memorable tournament for him.
Robertson said that, "I want a career-ending highlight. I've still got one medal which isn't in my cabinet, an Olympic gold medal. That is still the dream for me and while it's still possible then life is good.”
The qualifying round for the 2012 London Olympics will start from next month. Robertson and Wallwork will be working hard in the qualifying events to book their place in the Olympics as soon as possible.
Robertson expressed that, "The main thing is to make sure we qualify for the games, as quickly as possible and then from early next year we can start thinking about how we can make the podium."
The Robertson and Wallwork are optimistic to perform well in the World Badminton Championship 2011, which will take place in London, from 8-14 August. A good performance in this event will earn them a decent world ranking and their chances of success in
the 2012 London Olympics will also grow stronger.
