Nathan Yeomans and Chase Wilson finish on top in ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic Semi-finals
America’s Nathan Yeomans and his fellow countryman Chase Wilson got their place confirmed in their Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic after walking away with top honours in their respective Semi-finals that went down at the
Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, April 1.
America’s Chris Ward and his compatriot Nat Young rounded out the runner-up position in the first and second Semi-final respectively to advance through into the Final of the latest ASP 4-Star event as well.
The crowd got treated to a heavy dose of adrenaline-pumping action as the surfers continued to push each other to the limits while pursuing a title shot. The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event had become quite challenging as the day progressed,
keeping the surfers on their toes as they hunted for a decent score.
Pitted against Ward, Hawaii’s Hank Gaskell and Australia’s Mitch Crews in the first Semi-final, Yeomans came up with a superb performance to steal the show.
Aided by both his skills as well as luck, the local talent found an opportunity to post a big score early in the heat. Catching the approaching juicy wave, Yeomans unloaded a string of exquisite tricks to earn an impressive 8.50 points for the effort. After
a long and determined search, he eventually came across yet another good wave, which he used to add an additional 7.43 points to his account. The resultant heat-total of 15.93 points kept him well ahead of the pack on the score-board to eventually seal the
fate of the battle in his favour.
Ward accompanied Yeomans into the Final after getting hold of the runner-up place through his heat-total of 9.83 points, which included a 4.60 and 5.23-point wave.
Gaskell and Crews struggled to find their rhythm in the testing surfing conditions. The Hawaiian surfer finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.46 points, whereas Crews rounded out the bottom-positions with a heat-total of 6.93 points.
In an all-American second Semi-final, Wilson downed Young, Gabe Kling and Conner Coffin to make his way into the final stage of the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 10.40 points.
A two-wave total of 9.04 points proved sufficient to carry Young into the Final as well, whereas Kling and Coffin finished with a heat-total of 8.56 and 2.50 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
