Nathan Yeomans and Wiggolly Dantas win their heats: First round of Super Surf International – Part 5
The first round of the Super Surf International, the fifth ASP Prime event of the year, continued to deliver heart-pumping surfing action in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 31th.
The first eight heats had turned out to be nothing short of exciting and the fans only expected additional dose of thrill and entertainment as the talented surfers from across the globe, along with a healthy army of local surfer, competed for survival and
a place in the next stage of the competition. Even the demanding weather was not able to deter the surfers’ spirits and passion.
The ninth heat in the round of 96 pitted America’s Nathan Yeomans against France’s Joan Duru and the two Brazilian surfers, Paulo Moura and Willian Cardoso.
Yeomans walked away victorious from the heat after securing 7.90 and 6.10 of his final two waves in the heat to finish with a heat-total of 14.00. The top finish confirmed his position in the next stage of the event. Also making it into the next round was
Moura, who finished in second position, earning 6.50 points off his wave first and moving on to get 6.43 off his second wave in the final moments of the heat.
Duru and Cardoso failed exhibit a satisfactory performance and ended up in third and fourth positions respectively. This result marked the end of the road for them, which basically means that they no longer remain in contention for the event title.
Brazilian Wiggolly Dantas faced off against his compatriots Robson Santos and Jihad Khodr, along with Hawaii’s Granger Larsen.
The currents were becoming increasingly difficult to surf, but Dantas managed to hold his own and looked quite comfortable in the sea. He was the only one who caught numerous waves and the effort was not without a reward. He locked a wave to score 7.17 early
in the heat and followed it up with a 6.93 wave in the later stages to finish with a total score of 14.10. The score remained unbeatable and carried him off to victory, confirming him as the winner.
Larsen put up a commendable fight but was unable to climb to the top position. He eventually had to settle for runner-up position after scoring 6.50 points from his first wave and 6.00 from his second to finish with 12.50 points.
Santos and Khodr rounded out the third and fourth position, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
