Nathan Yeomans claims victory in Round 2 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
American professional surfer Nathan Yeomans stepped into the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the latest edition of Quiksilver Saquarema presented by Coca-Cola after walking away with the win in the 12th heat of Round 2 (Round of 48) at the
point-break of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 23.
Brazil’s Filipe Toledo accompanied Yeomans into the next round after securing runner-up position in the heat. New Zealand’s Jay Quinn finished third, while America’s Tanner Gudauskas rounded out the bottom position. The failure to finish in top-two resulted
in the elimination of both the surfers from the contention for the event title.
The four-to-six foot waves gracing the primary event site on day 2 of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event seemed like an ideal canvas for the world’s top surfing talent to put their stylish skills on display. There was plenty
of motivation for the surfers to put their best tricks on exhibitions as they had an opportunity to close their fingers around a slice of the huge winning prize and collect up to 850 ASP ranking points.
The 12th heat of Round 2 saw Yeomans take on Toledo, Quinn and Gudauskas in a four-man battle for a spot in the third round.
As the showdown got underway, Yeomans hardly wasted any time in stepping up and stamping his authority in the battle. Moving to a perfect spot to catch a juicy left-hander in the opening minutes of the heat, the American surfer pulled off a series of quick
turns smoothly to earn an 8.17 from the judges. Keeping the momentum going, he managed to add an additional 5.67 points on the score-board, thus taking his heat-total to 13.84 points. His effort remained unbeatable until the end of the heat to earn him the
win.
Toledo was nothing short of impressive during the course of the four-man battle either. The Brazilian surfer utilised his local knowledge of the surfing conditions on hand to find a 7.00 and 6.53-point wave, consequently securing runner-up position with
a heat-total of 13.53 points.
Quinn finished third with a heat-total of 12.36 points, while Gudauskas finished in fourth place after collecting a couple of scores in the four-point range for a heat-total of 8.87 points.
