Nathan Yeomans prevail over Filipe Toledo to enter Quiksilver Saquarema Prime Quarter-finals
America’s Nathan Yeomans successfully advanced through into the Quarter-finals at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after successfully claiming victory over Brazil’s Filipe Toledo in the eighth heat of Round 5 (Round of 16) that went
down at the point-break of Itauna Beach in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 26.
The American surfer could not have hoped for a better result as the confidence gained from the comprehensive victory was definitely going to help him during his battle in the next stage of the competition.
The three-to-five foot waves breaking at the primary event site on the latest day of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime served as an ideal canvas for the top surfing talent to showcase the numerous tricks in their arsenal. While the conditions had been perfect during
the morning session, the situation had started to become a bit demanding as the day progressed, with the sea losing its generosity and frequency of potent scoring opportunities reducing significantly.
Regardless of the demanding conditions, the surfers were all set to push hard during their battles, determined to ensure their survival in the contention for the event title as there were plenty of coveted rewards to be won in case of victory.
The eighth heat of Round 5 saw Yeomans and Toledo square-off in a man-on-man battle for a place in the Quarter-finals.
As the battle got underway, Yeomans wasted very little time in stamping his authority over his rival. Continuing to show-off his promising form, the American surfer moved into a perfect position to catch the biggest wave of the heat to launch into a string
of exquisite manoeuvres, earning a 7.93 to the score-board in the process. Going through a series of mediocre scores, Yeomans locked his second business-wave in the final minutes of the heat to add an additional 5.17 points to his account, this moving to a
heat-total of 13.10 points.
Toledo failed to come up with a solid response to his rival’s performance. The local talent scored a 5.50 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 4.17-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 9.67 points. The 3.43-point deficit
caused Toledo to concede victory to Yeomans, sending the latter into the next round.
