Nathaniel Curran and Adriano de Souza move into semi-finals at Mr Price Pro Ballito
America’s Nathaniel Curran and Brazil’s Adriano de Souza made their way through into the semi-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito that resumed at Willard Beach in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on Sunday, July 8.
Curran got the better of South Africa’s Travis Logie in the first Quarter-final to confirm his place in the stage of the competition, while removing the latter from the race for the event title.
The second Quarter-final saw De Souza put on a superb performance to comfortably triumph over Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth, advancing into the semi-finals while bringing the competition to e premature end for his rival in the process.
With solid 1.5 metre waves and off-shore conditions prevailing at the primary event site, the in-form surfers got ready to push themselves hard in order to get themselves a successful result in their quarter-final battle.
The first Quarter-final pitted Curran against Travis Logie in a man-on-man battle for a place in the semi-finals. Both the surfers had been exhibiting a promising form since the start of the latest ASP Prime event and were expected to put on a strong resistance
to stay in contention for the event title until the end.
As the battle got underway, both Curran and Logie got off to a relatively modest start. The search for a couple of potent opportunities continued for a while before Logie posted a couple of average-wave scores on the score-board to reach a heat-total of
10.83 points.
Curran took his time to warm up to the conditions on hand and patiently waiting for a juicy set to arrive. In the end, he managed to get his hands on two comparatively decent waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.60 points. The score held up until the
end to see him through to victory and carried him through into the next round.
The second Quarter-final saw De Souza, current ASP World No.4, completely steal the show with his phenomenal performance. Collecting a couple of excellent wave-scores, the Brazilian powerhouse finished with a heat-total of 17.33 points, putting Toth under
immense pressure. The Puerto Rican surfer completely succumbed to the challenge and ended up finishing with a heat-total of 5.73 points, consequently sending his rival into the next stage of the competition.
