Nathaniel Curran and Granger Larsen prevail in Round 3 of Reef Hawaiian Pro 2011
The third day of Reef Hawaiian kept the surfing action running at Haleiwa in Oahu, Hawaii, on Wednesday, November 23, as the Reef Hawaiian Pro wrapped up the last two heats of its Round of 64 (Round 3). The 15th heat featured America’s Nathaniel
Curran competing against his compatriot Eric Geiselman, Brazil’s Jadson Andre and Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia, while the 16th heat pitted Granger Larsen against his fellow countryman Hank Gaskell, France’s Marc Lacomare and Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas.
Curran took an excellent come-from-behind victory in the 15th heat to advance through into the Round of 32 (Round 4) confidently, while Andre made it through into the next round as well due to his runner-up finish. Patacchia and Geiselman got
ejected from the competition after finishing in third and fourth positions respectively.
The 16th heat finished in Larsen’s favour and allowed him to pass through into the fourth round without sustaining a scratch. Lacomare’s second-place finish extended his life in the competition as well by adding him to the Round 4 line-up. The
third and fourth place finish by Gaskell and Dantas respectively led to their elimination from the event.
As the 15th heat kicked off, the 27-year-old Curran got down to business right away and posted a 5.67 on the score-board, gaining an early advantage. Andre responded almost immediately with a 4.33-point wave, failing to offer a more effective
challenge to his rival.
As the heat progressed, Andree added another 5.00 points to his account which carried him to a heat-total of 9.33 points and put him in the lead. As the battle came close to the buzzer, Curran made a desperate effort on his final wave and earned 5.17 points
off it to claim victory with a heat-total of 10.84 points.
Patacchia finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.77 points, while Geiselman’s excellent run at the Reef Hawaiian Pro came to an end as he got eliminated after finishing in fourth place with a heat-total of 5.57 points.
The final heat of Round 3 turned out to be a low-scoring affair as neither of the surfers were able to post a big score on the score-board. The 21-year-old Larsen was able to walk away with victory after scoring 3.93 and 6.67 points off his top-two waves,
finishing with a resultant heat-total of 10.60 points.
Lacomare secured runner-up place after scoring 4.33 points off his first wave and following it up with a 5.17 points in the last minute of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of 9.50 points. The result carried him into the next round.
Gaskell finished third with a heat-total of 7.63 points, while Dantas rounded out the bottom position after earning an over-all 6.36 off his best two waves. The disappointing performances by the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
