Nathaniel Curran and Wiggolly Dantas capture victory in Round 2 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The first of three stops on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing the Reef Hawaiian Pro kept entertaining the crowd in attendance at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, November 22, as America’s Nathaniel Curran took on France’s Marc Lacomare, South
Africa’s Royden Bryson and Australia’s Perth Standlick in the 15th heat, while Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas squared off with America’s Eric Geiselman, Japan’s Masatoshi Ohno and Hawaii’s Casey Brown in the 16th heat of Round of 96 (Round
2).
The 15th heat saw Curran take the win with a convincing margin to guarantee a spot for himself in the Round of 64 (Round 3), while Lacomare kept himself in contention for the event title by securing the runner-up place. Bryson and Standlick took
third and fourth positions, consequently making a premature exit from the competition.
The 16th heat was dominated by Dantas, who shone throughout the entirety of the four-man battle to eventually claim top honours. Geiselman remained quite impressive as well and successfully grabbed the runner-up place to stay alive in the competition.
Ohno and Brown got ejected from the competition line-up after rounding out the third and fourth positions respectively.
As the 15th heat got underway, Curran took control of the battle by unloading a string of impressive manoeuvres on his first wave to post a 7.67 on the score-board. He soon followed it up with a 4.33-point wave to take his heat-total to 12.00
points, which consequently carried him off to success.
Lacomare remained quite determined during his search for competitive scores and eventually managed to secure runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 10.00 points, which comprised of a 5.50 and 4.50-point wave.
Bryson and Standlick failed to make much of an impact during the bout and consequently got eliminated after finishing with a two-wave total of 7.23 and 3.23 points. Standlick’s performance in particular was utterly disappointing as he struggled to find his
rhythm during the heat.
The final heat of Round 2 featured a strong performance by Dantas as he went on to claim top honours and confidently advance through into the next round. He opened up his account with a 6.83-point wave and followed it up with a spectacular 8.27-point wave
to finish with a heat-total of 15.10 points.
Geiselman’s performance was nothing short of decent either as he managed to find a couple of sixes in demanding surfing conditions to finishing with a heat-total of 12.67 points. The score earned him the runner-up result and sent him through into the next
round as well.
Ohno finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.73 points, while Brown rounded out the bottom position with 4.90 points in total off his top-two waves. The weak performances by the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
