  1. I believe National Carriers were part of, or a trading name of, British Road Services which were formed in 1948 as part of the British Transport Commission which became responsible for, among many other things, the road haulage operations of the pre-nationalisation railway companies. British Railways during the 1950s and early 1960s had its own dedicated fleet of delivery vehicles - small vans and the 'mechanical horses' - three wheeled tractor units which could easily turn in a small goods yard. Carriage of small parcels by train were one of the things that ceased under the Beeching Plan which closed most local goods depots and did away with the 'pick-up' goods train calling at wayside stations. The only parcels service offered thereafter by British Rail was Red Star Parcels which offered a service using passenger trains. That was sold in 1995 (after several unsuccessful attempts) to a management buyout, later being sold to Lynx Express Limited.
