National Hockey League Latest – Carolina Hurricanes win 6-5 against the Calgary Flames after a close battle in shootout
Carolina Hurricanes had the honor of hosting the Calgary Flames this Tuesday as part of the 636th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match was played at the RBC Centre with an attendance of around 10,000 fans. Goals were score
throughout the course of the match and with the scores level at the end of the regulation time, the match went into overtime where no goals were scored. However, Carolina Hurricanes emerged as 6-5 winners of the match after shootout. Jussi Jokinen was named
the star player of the match as he scored two goals and made an assist.
Both teams started the match with an attacking mentality which saw them coming across scoring chances from the very first play of the match. Not only did shots fly from everywhere but some excellent pieces plays were observed.
However, Calgary Flames struck first blood scoring through Jay Bouwmeester in the 5th minute from a decent flick shot to take the lead. However, it didn’t take long for Carolina Hurricanes to level the scores as they scored through Tuomo Ruutu
from a simple tip in shot a few minutes later.
The game was swinging in favour each team minute by minute more like a see saw. Calgary Flames silenced the home crowd as they regained the lead with a goal scored by Jarome Iginla from a spectacular backhand shot in the 14th minute.
A few minutes later, much to the delight of the home fans Carolina Hurricanes scored through Jussi Jokinen to level the scores on 2-2 as the teams went into the break. The period saw Calgary Flames making 12 goal attempts while Carolina Hurricanes made 6
goal attempts.
The second period followed similar line but the only difference was the fact that Carolina came out more productive of the two teams during the 20 minutes of play.
Carolina Hurricanes dominated the game as soon as the period started and took the lead in the 3rd minute through a brilliant goal scored by Erik Cole from a decent flick shot. Pressing on in search of further success, the home team managed to
double the lead with another goal scored by Eric Staal from a backhand shot in the 6th minute.
Jussi Jokinen put the Hurricanes in a comfortable position scoring his second goal for the night in the 15th minute. Calgary Flames also had the share of the scoring chances and offered some resistance as the period neared its end.
Their hard work was rewarded as Niklas Hagman scored in the 17th minute and cut the lead to two goals. The period ended with Carolina Hurricanes leading 5-3. During the course of the period Hurricanes made 11 goal attempts while Calgary Flames
made 8 goal attempts.
The final period was evenly matched but Calgary Flames scored the only two goals of the period to take the match into overtime. The first goal was scored by Curtis Glencross in the 2nd minute while the goal that levelled the scores was scored
by Rene Bourque in the 8th minute. There were several shots during the final period but only two goals were scored as the regulation time ended with the scores level on 5-5.
During overtime, there were scoring chances for both teams but no goals were scored. However, Jeff Skinner’s only goal in the shootout won Carolina Hurricanes the match 6-5.
