National Hockey League Latest – Philadelphia Flyers win 2-1 against the New Jersey Devils with the match being tougher than expected
Philadelphia Flyers played host to New Jersey Devils as part of the 612th game of the season. The match was played at the Wells Fargo Arena with an attendance of around 20,000 fans. The match was expected to be a one sided encounter but it wasn’t
to be as the Devils put up quite a show. However, the Flyers managed to notch up a 2-1 victory with James van Riemsdyk winning the player of the match award for his crucial opening goal.
The New Jersey Devils made a great start to the match as they started on a high displaying some excellent ice hockey skills that left the Flyers stunned at times. They not only kept possession but with the strong attacks left the Flyers thinking at times.
However, the Philadelphia Flyers experience and depth in squad was able to cope up with the pressure. The home teams managed to score in the 9th minute through a spectacular James van Riemsdyk shot to take the lead.
Philadelphia Flyers continued to pile attacks after attacks which resulted in the Devils defence crumbling once again as the Flyers bagged their second goal via Danny Briere’s decent strike from close range.
The period saw both teams end the period on a high note as they fired shots on goal but no further goals were score as the Flyers led 2-0 going into the break. During the course of the period Flyers made 11 goal attempts while the Devils made 12 goal attempts.
The second period followed on the same road as the first period with both teams making goal attempts regularly. The Devils managed to cut the lead to one goal scoring through Andy Greene in the 9th minute.
The New Jersey Devils was the stronger of the two teams in the period but their poor finishing up front left them trailing at the end of the period where they could have been in the lead. The period ended with Flyers leading 2-1. During the course of the
20 minute of play the Flyers making 8 goal attempts while the Devils made 12 goal attempts.
The final period was disappointing for both teams as chances came begging their way but they failed to convert them into goals. The period and the match ended with the Flyers winning the match 2-1. During the course of the final period, no goals were scored
despite the Devils making 11 goal attempts and the Philadelphia Flyers making 10 goal attempts.
