National Hockey League (NHL) October Review: Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina Hurricanes were another team that added themselves on the list of teams that wanted to make a Stanley Cup during the new 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and into the playoffs and by seeing how they ended the month of October,
they still have a lot to achieve but it is not impossible.
For many fans, Carolina is like of one of those teams that they can relate to due to the amount of talent coming out of players that seem normal in all aspects and not to flash with their manoeuvring.
Having one of the best rookies, Jeff Skinner, on their line-up, Carolina is certainly a team with valuable resources and using their resources is the only way to bring this club up to the top.
Playing 11 games during October, Carollina managed to win only four, three of which were in a row after having lost three straight to open the season.
In their second last contest, Carolina Hurricanes all-star goalie, Cam Ward, had a terrific performance and registered his first shutout of the season by blocking all 30 shots taken by a team like Chicago Blackhawks, which certainly means something in the
hockey world.
“We want to establish ourselves as one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference, and you’ve got do that by putting together wins and separating yourself”, forward Eric Staal said.
The games that Carolina actually did lose were marginal with most being a single goal or heading into overtime and even a shootout, which has head coach, Paul Maurice, motivated about what his team might be able to achieve in the future.
“I like the style of play that we’re playing and the understanding of it is good”, he said. “I’ve liked the games that we’ve won and how we’ve played. With the exception of the Winnipeg game, all of our losses have been 2-1 or 2-2 going into the third period,
so we’ve been in those as well”.
Maurice knows that there are still 71 games to go in the season before the playoffs begin, but securing a top position early on makes it easier as the season progresses.
“At the start of the year, you look to get to your game as quickly as you can”, Maurice added.
