National Hockey League (NHL) October Review: Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers are not the only ones that have high hopes for the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, but the fans and followers of the Eastern Conference club have also expressed their desire to root for the team to bring home
the Stanley Cup this time around.
Philadelphia was without a doubt, one of the boldest clubs throughout the league during the 2011 offseason in regards of acquiring, letting go, trading and re-signing players from different parts of the major league.
They traded off two of their top forwards, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets respectively in order to make some salary cap space, but in that transaction, also acquired a few very valuable players.
In the deal with Los Angeles, Philadelphia acquired 23-year-old Wayne Simmonds, a top-notch right winger who has been playing very well indeed for Flyers.
The past 11 games have been good for the player as he has registered 24 minutes in penalty time and five points (2 goals, 3 assists).
Jaromir Jagr, who made his comeback into the North American league with Philadelphia, has also been playing well with 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in all 11 games, making him one of the most consistent on the team, which is something Flyers immensely need.
Philadelphia kicked off the new season with three straight wins over Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, both on the road and in their first home game against the 2011 Stanley Cup finalists, Vancouver Canucks.
Sadly after that, the Flyers team has not seen more than a single win without losing a match right after and ended the month in an up and down pattern.
Losing, 3-2, against Los Angeles Kings during overtime started their downhill drive but coming up strong, 7-2, against Ottawa Senators showed hope of a recovery which was unfortunately followed by a, 5-2, loss by Washington Capitals.
St. Louis Blues edged Philadelphia, 5-2, for another match before they won their fifth of the season against Toronto Maple Leafs. Losing two more straight against Montreal Canadiens, 5-1, and Winnipeg Jets, 9-8, Flyers played their last game of October against
Carolina Hurricanes and won, 5-1.
Philadelphia still has a long road in front of them, which should be used to slowly but gradually make a comeback into the top ranks of the league.
