National Hockey League Special Report – Colorado Avalanche come up with a 5-4 win against the Detroit Red Wings
Colorado Avalanche had the honour of hosting the 630th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series as they were up against the Detroit Red Wings. The match was played this Monday at the Pepsi Centre with around 18,000 fans coming to witness
the match. Detroit Red Wings were definitely the stronger of the two teams but Colorado Avalanche outperformed them in the first period which proved to be the difference as the Colorado Avalanche won the match 5-4. Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche was
named the star selection of the match with his two goals and an assist.
Both teams started off the proceedings attacking and they looked to score as soon as possible. Colorado Avalanche tasted early success as they scored through Paul Stastny from a wonderful flick shot in the 6th minute to take the lead.
The celebration was short lived as the Detroit Red Wings managed to level the scores with a goal from Jan Mursak in the very next minute. The game turned into a see saw as momentum kept on shifting hands.
The 9th minute of the period saw Matt Duchene score his first goal of the night to put Colorado Avalanche back into the lead. Kevin Porter followed by putting his name on the score sheet for Avalanche in the 13th minute.
Colorado Avalanche continued to dominate the game with Matt Duchene giving the final touch as the puck went into the net once again in the 15th minute. Detroit Red Wings came up with late resistance and scored through Brain Rafalski in the 19th
minute.
The period ended with the Colorado Avalanche leading 4-2 as the home side made 14 goal attempts while Detroit Red Wings made 9 goal attempts.
Both teams continued with the attacking mentality but the attacks weren’t as intensified as in the first period.
There were scoring chances for both teams from the start of the second period out of which Colorado Avalanche converted a 7th minute opportunity into goal through David Jones further strengthening their lead from a decent backhand shot.
The final few minutes of the period saw Detroit Red Wings come up with a response during which they managed to score through Henrik Zetterberg in the 16th minute as the period ended with Colorado Avalanche leading 5-3.
The final 20 minutes of match were evenly matched by both sides. When Detroit scored in the 10th minute through Tomas Holmstrom, it looked as if the Detroit Red Wings would find a way back but it wasn’t to be and the match ended with Colorado
Avalanche winning 5-4.
