National Hockey League Special Report – Minnesota Wild defeat Calgary Flames 6-0 despite playing away
The final game of Wednesday which was also the 695th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the Calgary Flames play host to the Minnesota Wild. The match was played at the Scotiabank Saddledome with around 19,000 fans coming to witness
the match. Both teams played the 47th game of the season and were looking to win the match.
Minnesota Wild proved to be the more productive side of the night bagging regular goals and won the match 6-0 in the end. Niklas Backstrom was named the star selection of the match for the 37 saves he made keeping the 100% saves percentage intact.
Minnesota Wild started stronger of the two teams. Both teams were excellent on the counter attacks early on but Calgary Flames decided to defend after the first few attacks. This didn’t work as Minnesota Wild managed to score through Martin Havlat from a
decent flick shot in the 4th minute to take the lead.
Calgary Flames responded to this with a few goal attempts and brilliant passing but they couldn’t score. The game turned into an offensive battle which saw the Minnesota Wild scoring once again in the 7th minute through Mikko Koivu from a decent
strike to double their lead.
Both teams continued to attack till the end of the period but no further goals were scored as the period ended as Minnesota led 2-0 going into the break with both teams making 9 goal attempts in the period.
The second period was much tougher than the first one. Though there were many goal attempts made in the period but they were from long range. The defences were at the top of its game and didn’t allow any players to come near the goal.
However, Minnesota Wild broke past the defence once again in the 19th minute and scored through a brilliant shot by John Madden. This was the only goal of the period even though Calgary Flames made 12 goal attempts in the period and Minnesota
Wild made 9 goal attempts.
Though the final period was dominated by the Calgary Flames but it was Minnesota Wild who bagged goals in the period with some excellent counter attacking.
The away side scored in the 3rd minute to stun the home fans and go ahead by four goals. The goal was scored by Cal Clutterbuck from a decent strike. Calgary Flames continued to attack in hope for a goal but again Minnesota Wild caught them on
a counter attack and scored through Chuck Kobasew from a powerful strike.
Minnesota Wild sealed the match with Martin Havlat scoring his second goal of the night in the 18th minute. The period and the match ended with Minnesota Wild winning the match 6-0 with Calgary Flames making 16 goal attempts and Minnesota Wild
making 6 goal attempts in the final period.
