National Hockey League Special Report – New Jersey Devils win 5-2 against the New York Islanders
New York Islanders playing host to the New Jersey Devils was the second game of Monday and the 678th
game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match took at the Nassau Coliseum with around 13,500 fans coming to witness the match.
New Jersey Devils hadn’t beaten the Islanders in their last two encounters but this time they came up with a splendid performance to emerge as 5-2 winners of the match.
Mattias Tedenby’s goal and assist for the New Jersey Devils proved to be the difference maker as they won the match.
New Jersey Devils made a good start to the match despite playing away and being the last team in the league standings. Not only did they dominate possession early on but with the precision in passing the away side was able to score and take the lead in the
6th minute. The goal was scored by Vladimir Zharkov from a brilliant backhand shot.
The New Jersey Devils weren’t done after the goal and kept on piling the pressure on the home team. Combining very well together, the New Jersey Devils successfully scored once again through Ilya Kovalchuk in the 6th minute to double their lead.
New York Islanders also got strong with the passage of time and started to come across scoring opportunities. They had two or three clear cut scoring chances but the front line failed to convert them into goals.
The period ended with New Jersey Devils leading 2-0 at the end of the first period with Devils making 11 goal attempts and Islanders making 9 goal attempts.
The second was very tough which saw both the teams attack right from the start of the proceedings. All players were involved in the attacks with little importance given to the defence.
New Jersey Devils with the strong start to the period once again successfully scored through Mattias Tedenby from a backhand shot in the 7th minute.
New York Islanders also started to come up with shots and some brilliant pieces of play. New York Islanders managed to bag a couple of goals in quick succession. PA Parenteau managed to open Islanders account with a goal through a backhand shot in the 11th
minute.
New York Islanders managed to score once again in the next minute through Michael Grabner to cut the lead to just one goal.
New Jersey Devils started to come across scoring chances once again as the period neared its end. Rod Pelley managed to score through a tip in shot in the 17th minute. New Jersey Devils sealed the dominating performance of the period with another
goal in the 18th minute through Dainius Zubrus from a well placed flick shot.
The period ended with New Jersey Devils leading 5-2 with both teams making 10 goal attempts during the course of the period.
Both teams made goal attempts during the final period but they failed to capitalize from the chances and no goals were scored during the final 20 minutes of play. New Jersey Devils made 6 goal attempts while New York Islanders made 10 goal attempts with
the New York Islanders winning the match 5-2.
