National Hockey League Updates – Columbus Blue Jackets win 3-2 against Florida Panthers after overtime
The second game of Wednesday was hosted by the Florida Panthers as they were up against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The match was played at the Bank Atlantic Centre with around 12,000 fans coming to witness the 694th game of the 2010 Compuware
NHL Premiere Series.
After Florida Panthers took an early lead, it took the Columbus Blue Jackets quite some time to level the scores once again. However, they finally managed to do it in the final period which took the match into overtime. During overtime, Columbus Blue Jackets
scored once again and won the match 3-2 in the end. RJ Umberger was named the star selection for his winning goal in overtime.
Florida Panthers made confident and brilliant start to the match. Panthers weren’t afraid to go on the attacks. In fact, this worked for them as they didn’t give their opposition time and space to settle. Coupled with this was the strong offence of the Florida
Panthers which put them in the lead in the 3rd minute with the goal scored by David Booth.
Columbus Blue Jackets went on the attack as well in search of the equalizer but it was Florida Panthers scored once again to double their lead. The goal was scored by Cory Stillman from a decent tip in shot in the 9th minute.
Both teams continued to attack with Columbus Blue Jackets finally scoring in the 19th minute through Fedor Tyutin from a long range strike to cut the lead to one goal.
The period ended with Florida Panthers leading 2-1 at the end of the period as they made 15 goal attempts while Blue Jackets made 7 goal attempts.
The second period wasn’t as strong offensively and was dominated mainly by the defence who played a major role in the attacks being cut down regular. There were a few goal attempts during the period but no goals were scored during the 20 minutes of play.
Columbus Blue Jackets made 11 goal attempts in the period while Florida Panthers made 6 goal attempts in the period with Florida Panthers still leading 2-1 as the teams went into the break.
The final period was mostly dominated by the Columbus Blue Jackets as they fired shots and came up with some excellent ice hockey skills. It didn’t take long for both teams to start attacking. Columbus Blue Jackets scored in the final minute through Antoine
Vermette to level the scores. There were more than a dozen shots fired by Blue Jackets but unfortunately they couldn’t score as the period ended with the scores level on 2-2.
During the course of the period Columbus Blue Jackets made 17 goal attempts while Florida Panthers made 9 goal attempts. The match went into overtime where RJ Umberger scored from a tip in shot to win the match 3-2 for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
