National Hockey League Updates – New York Rangers finally beat Vancouver Canucks 1-0 after almost 6 years
One of the most eagerly anticipated games of the season was the New York Rangers playing host to the league leaders, Vancouver Canucks. The match was played at the Madison Square Garden this Thursday with an attendance of around 18,000 fans. This was the
649th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series and expected to be won by the Canucks.
However, New York Rangers had other things in mind as they came up with a very tight defence and decent offence which at the end saw them winning the match 1-0 at the end. Henrik Lundqvist, goal keeper of the New York Rangers was named the star selection
of the match for the 31 saves he made and kept the clean sheet intact.
Vancouver Canucks started as the hot favourites to win the match and doing so in style. They made a strong start to the match but were successfully neutralized by the brilliant defence of the Rangers. Every passing minute resulted in both teams getting stronger
and stronger.
There were several scoring chances in the middle part of the period but neither of the teams was able to capitalize. However, much to the surprise of everybody New York Rangers ended period on a high piling shots after shots and creating problems for the
Vancouver Canucks defence.
The period didn’t see any goals but New York Rangers took a lot of positives from it. The scores were level on 0-0 with New York Rangers making 8 goal attempts while Vancouver Canucks made 11 goal attempts.
The second saw the New York Rangers start from where they left off in the first period. The strength in the attacks of the Rangers got stronger and stronger until finally the Vancouver Canucks defence crumbled and New York Rangers took the lead in the 8th
minute.
The goal was scored by Wojtek Wolski from a brilliantly placed flick shot. Rangers continued to dominate the game for a couple of minutes after which Vancouver Canucks made a few goal attempts as well.
The period ended with no further goals with the New York Rangers leading 1-0 as the period ended. Vancouver Canucks made 9 goal attempts in the period while New York Rangers made 16 goal attempts.
The final period saw both teams come up with a similar strategy of defending and being on toes looking for counterattacks. There were chances for both teams during the period but the defence was up to the mark and cut down any such dangerous attacks.
Shots from everywhere on the pitch flew on goal from both sides in search of a goal but unfortunately, this didn’t happen. Both teams ended the period displaying some excellent ice hockey. New York Rangers goal keeper made couple of brilliant saves in the
final phase of the match which played a major role as New York Rangers won the match 1-0. Both teams made 11 goal attempts each in the final period of the match.
