National Hockey League Updates – Philadelphia Flyers win 3-2 against New York Rangers to trail Vancouver Canucks by one point
The all important game which started after Vancouver Canucks lost to Minnesota Wild was the New York Rangers up against the Philadelphia Flyers. The match was played at the Madison Square Garden, home of the Rangers. A win for the Flyers would cut the lead
of the Canucks to just one point while a loss wouldn’t harm them either. This was the 674th game of the season which was attended by 18,200 fans.
However, with some excellent ice hockey on display the Philadelphia Flyers with the strong offence and a decent defence emerged as 3-2 winners of the match in the end. Ville Leino was awarded player of the match for his goal and an assist.
Philadelphia Flyers made a great start to the match combining well and firing shots regularly on goal. Philadelphia Flyers was the dominating force in the period from the very start and it looked as a goal was on the way.
This certainly proved to be the case as Philadelphia Flyers successfully scored through Jeff Carter in the 7th minute from a brilliant tip in shot to take the lead. The goal was well worked which saw them going past the tight defence of the Rangers
easily.
Both teams moved on with the match smoothly when suddenly Philadelphia Flyers shifted gears once again. The away side successfully doubled the lead with the goal scored by Ville Leino from a brilliant shot in the 15th minute.
The period ended with New York Rangers on high firing shots but they couldn’t find the back of the net as Philadelphia Flyers led 2-0 going into the break. During the course of the period New York Rangers made 7 goal attempts while Philadelphia Flyers made
10 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams explode right from the start of the period till the very end. Not only did they keep possession and display excellent skills while passing but got past the defences regularly.
Philadelphia Flyers were the stronger at the start of the period and successfully scored through Mike Richards in the 5th minute from a brilliant shot to take the score to 3-0.
There were numerous goal attempts made by both teams throughout the period. However, no more goals were scored as the period ended with the Philadelphia Flyers leading 3-0 going into the break. During the course of the period Philadelphia Flyers made 14
goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 19 goal attempts.
The final period saw New York Rangers dominate the game from the start till the end. This time the productivity was also there. The home team much to the delight of the home fans scored through Wojtek Wolski in the 10th minute.
A few minutes later, New York Rangers were again pressing and successfully cut the lead to just one goal in the 12th minute with the goal scored by Derek Stepan from a wonderful long range shot.
Unfortunately, New York Rangers fell shot by a goal as the period and match ended with the Philadelphia Flyers won the match 3-2. During the final period New York Rangers made 10 goal attempts while their defence restricted the Flyers to just 3 goal attempts
in the period.
