National Hockey League Updates – Phoenix Coyotes thrash Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1
The 651st game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Jobing.com Arena, home of the Phoenix Coyotes. The match was played with the home team playing host to the Toronto Maple Leafs this Thursday with around 11,000 fans coming
to attend the match.
This was the 43rd game of the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs while the Phoenix Coyotes played their 44th game. The match was pretty much even after the first two periods of the match but Phoenix Coyotes scored four goals in the
final period to emerge as 4-1 winners of the match. Ilya Bryzgalov, goal keeper of the Phoenix Coyotes was named the star selection of the match as he made 28 saves in the match.
Phoenix Coyotes and the Toronto Maple Leafs are two teams which can’t be differentiated from each other. They have the same caliber and strength in their roster which resulted in the match being expected to be a tough battle.
This wasn’t the case as the Phoenix Coyotes capitalizing from the brilliant start they made, scored in the 3rd minute through Radim Vrbata to take the lead. After a few more shots on goal, Phoenix Coyotes decided to go on the defence. This resulted
in the Toronto Maple Leafs getting ample space and time to work their attacks.
The away side came up with numerous goal attempts during the course of the period but unfortunately couldn’t score as the period ended with the Phoenix Coyotes leading 1-0 at the end. During the period, Phoenix Coyotes made 4 goal attempts while the Toronto
Maple Leafs made 12 goal attempts.
The second period was more like the game expected from both teams as they defending and restricted the teams to their half during the course of the period. There were less goal attempts in the period and whatever chances came were difficult and rare.
Both teams displayed excellent skills and successfully got past the defences but the finishing failed them on quite a few occasions. The period ended goalless with the Phoenix Coyotes still leading 1-0. During the course of the period Phoenix Coyotes made
8 goal attempts while Toronto Maple Leafs made 5 goal attempts.
Phoenix Coyotes totally dominated the final period attacking right from the start. The home teams set the home crowd wild scoring in the 2nd minute through Shane Doan. The Phoenix Coyotes continued to attack and successfully doubled the lead with
another goal in the 5th minute scored by Taylor Pyatt.
Toronto Maple Leafs started to come up with a few shots but their confidence was shattered as Phoenix Coyotes scored once again through Lauri Korpikoski in the 10th minute. Toronto Maple Leafs managed to score a consolation goal in the 17th
minute through Colby Armstrong.
However, Phoenix Coyotes sealed the match with their final goal of the match scored in the final minute scored by Keith Yandle from a well placed shot. The period and the match ended with Phoenix Coyotes winning the match 5-1.
The final period saw Phoenix Coyotes making 9 goal attempts while Toronto Maple Leafs made 12 goal attempts.
