National Hockey League Updates – Tampa Bay Lightning win 1-0 against Washington Capitals after overtime

The second game of Tuesday and the 587th game of 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw Washington Capitals play host to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The match was played at the Verizon Centre in front of around 18,000 fans. Both teams are closely
placed in the table in the fifth and sixth spots respectively. The match was anticipated to be a very tough and tight encounter and it certainly turned out to be one.
 There were no goals in regulation time but Tampa Lighting scored in the overtime through Martin St. Louis to win the match 1-0. Dwayne Roloson was named the star selection of the match for his 34 saves.
After a smooth and swift start to the match which saw Washington Capitals making goal attempts and almost scoring in the opening few minutes, it was Tampa Bay Lightning that dominated much of the remaining period.
Both teams had the share of their share of chances but unfortunately weren’t able to construct attacks early on. However, with the passage of time Tampa Bay Lightning started to come across scoring chances too.
During the course of the period Tampa Bay Lightning made 12 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 5 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams come out with more energy and determination to score. Attacks were seen building every now and then with shots flying from everywhere on the pitch.
Splendid passing was on display from both teams with powerful and strong shooting. Chances came begging in each team’s way but they failed to convert them into goals. The early part of the period saw Tampa Bay Lightning emerge as the stronger team while
the later part saw Washington Capitals end the period on a high.   
Despite a total of 34 goal attempts made by the two teams, no goals were scored in the period with the period ending goalless.
The final period saw the teams not attacking as much as they did in the previous periods and concentrated on not letting the opposing team score. Both teams had chances in the period but the half hearted attacks at the end of the period resulted in no goals
being scored in the period.
Both teams made 8 goal attempts each during the course of the period and with the score on 0-0 with regulation time finished, the match went into overtime.
During the overtime, Martin St. Louis scored through quick fired shot in the 3rd minute that won Tampa Bay Lightning the match 1-0.
