National Hockey League Updates – Tampa Bay Lightning win 3-2 against the Columbus Blue Jackets after shootout
Tampa Bay Lightning hosted the 688th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series this Tuesday at the St. Pete Times Forum. The match saw the home team up against the Columbus Blue Jackets. There was a crowd of 13,000 that came to witness the
match.
Both teams were neck to neck in the three periods of the match. The scores at the end of the each period were level. The match went into overtime where the teams still couldn’t be separated when finally Tampa bay Lightning emerged as 3-2 winners of the match
after shootout. Dwayne Roloson, goal keeper of the Tampa Bay Lightning was the player of the match as he made 28 saves while playing complete 65 minutes of the match.
Columbus Blue Jackets made a great start to the match attacking right from the start and coming up with some brilliant pieces of play. There were several goal scoring chances early on but none of them saw the puck finding the back of the net.
However, Columbus Blue Jackets finally scored through RJ Umberger from a decent strike in the 8th minute to get into the lead. After the goal Columbus Blue Jackets kept on attacking and looked to score further goals but unfortunately, they were
caught on a counter attack which resulted in the Tampa Bay Lightning scoring through Steven Stamkos from a brilliant strike to level the scores in the 18th minute.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with the Tampa Bay Lightning making 6 goal attempts in the period while the Columbus Blue Jackets made 13 goal attempts.
The second period of the match saw the Tampa Bay Lightning start stronger of the two teams and with the some excellent combination, the home team started to threaten the opposing goal.
With the passage of time attacks increased and shots flew from everywhere on the pitch. Steven Stamkos scored in the 15th minute from a powerful long range shot to put the Tampa Bay into the lead. Columbus Blue Jackets responded to this with attacks
as well and didn’t take long to score.
The away side scored in the very next minute to level the scores through Derick Brassard. The period saw a few more shots on goal but no goals were scored as the period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with Tampa Bay making 11 goal attempts while Columbus
Blue Jackets made 9 goal attempts in the period.
The final period didn’t see much happening as both teams maintained a very tight defence during the course of the final 20 minutes of play. Though there were chances but they were rare and very difficult. Hence, no goals were scored during the period and
the period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with each team making 5 goal attempts each respectively.
Consequently, the match went into overtime but no goals were scored. However, Tampa Bay Lightning won the match 3-2 in shootout with the winning goal scored by Ryan Malone.
