National Hockey League Updates – Vancouver Canucks bag eighth consecutive win as they beat Edmonton Oilers to retain top spot in the league
The league leaders Vancouver Canucks hosted the 610th game of the season at the Rogers Arena as they were up against the Edmonton Oilers. The match was played this Friday with a 19,000 attendance as both teams played the 40th game of
their respective campaigns. Vancouver Canucks came up with a dominating performance winning 6-1 at the end despite having a goalless first period. Ryan Kesler was the man of the match with three goals.
Edmonton Oilers fired a few shots on goal at the start of the match but later the Vancouver Canucks totally dominated the period. Not only did they keep possession for long time but passing and shooting were all superb.
Edmonton Oilers goalkeeper did a brilliant job early on as the strong Vancouver Canucks offence was restricted to long range shooting early on. However, the attacks intensified as the period neared its end. Unfortunately, no goals were scored during the
course of the period and both teams went into the break with the scores deadlocked on 0-0. During the 20 minutes of play, Vancouver Canucks made 14 goal attempts while Edmonton Oilers made 6 goal attempts.
Vancouver Canucks continued to dominate the game from the start of the second period and scored through Daniel Sedin in the very first minute to take the lead. The home side was determined to score goals and worked hard.
Consequently, they doubled the lead with another goal a few minutes later scored by Ryan Kesler. Vancouver Canucks completed a dominating period’s performance with their third goal in the 7th minute scored by Daniel Sedin from a spectacular backhand
shot.
Edmonton Oilers also opened their account scoring in the final minute through Ales Hemsky from a backhand shot as the period ended with Vancouver Canucks leading 3-1. During the second period both teams made 7 goal attempts each.
The final period was totally dominated by the Vancouver Canucks. The period started with attacks from the home side and ended in the same note.
Vancouver scored the first and second goals of the period through Ryan Kesler, both from long range shots in the 5th and 11th minutes respectively. Vancouver faced a few shots from Edmonton Oilers but they sealed the match with the
final goal of the match scored by Alexander Edler in the 14th minute.
The period saw Edmonton Oilers making 6 goal attempts while Vancouver Canucks made 12 goal attempts and won the match 6-1 as retained the top spot in the league with 59 points.
