National Hockey League special report – Vancouver Canucks win 4-3 against New York Islanders
The second match of Tuesday saw the league leaders, Vancouver Canucks playing away to the New York Islanders. The match was played at the Nassau Coliseum with around 9,000 fans coming to witness the match. This was the 634th game of the NHL regular season with the Canucks playing their 42nd game while the Islanders played their 41st game.
The match was expected to very tight as New York Islanders had won the previous two encounters between the two teams. However, Vancouver Canucks is in brilliant form and they managed to emerge as 4-3 winners of the match after shootout. Blake Cameau was named the player of the match with his goal and an assist.
Vancouver Canucks totally dominated the first period from the start to the finish. Attack after attack was piled by the away side. Though they were caught on several counter attacks, this didn’t stop them from attacking.
With the a lot of hard work put in and determination being the added factor, Vancouver Canucks successfully scored through Alexander Burrows from a tip in shot in the 5th minute.
Vancouver Canucks continued to fire shots throughout the period with New York Islanders coming up with a few shots but no further goals were scored as the period ended with the Canucks leading 1-0. During the course of the period Vancouver Canucks made 20 goal attempts while New York Islanders made 9 goal attempts.
The second period saw both teams come out stronger than the first period which resulted in chances coming both team’s ways. There were several occasions where it looked as if Canucks would score but the shots went wide off the target.
However, New York Islanders scored the first goal of the period in the 16th minute with the goal scored by Jack Hillen from a powerful long range shot. Vancouver Canucks stunned the home fans with a goal in the final minute of the period to regain the lead. The goal was scored by Ryan Kesler from a decent strike.
The period ended with Vancouver Canucks leading 2-1 as they made 10 goal attempts while New York Islanders made 16 goal attempts.
The final period was again one of the offensive battles that saw the New York Islanders win the battle of the period. The home team scored through a spectacular shot by John Tavares. This levelled the scores and when Blake Cameau scored in the 15th minute it looked as if another upset and win was on the way for the Islanders.
However, Vancouver Canucks weren’t done yet and successfully scored in the same minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Kevin Bieska from a superb tip in strike. The scores were level on 3-3 so the match into overtime.
During overtime, no goals were scored but Ryan Kesler’s goal in shootout proved to be the difference as Vancouver Canucks won the match 4-3.
During the course of the final period, Vancouver Canucks made 18 goal attempts while New York Islanders made 15 goal attempts.
