Question:

National Honor Society?

I'm a senior, and I want to get into NHS. I have the GPA and the service hours to get in, but the other requirements are two examples of leadership. I have no leadership experience, so what should I do to get them? If I joined the Math Club and Science Club at my school, would that suffice? This is really bugging me - I only want to get into NHS because it looks good on my application. Other than that, I think it's BS.

Any suggestions on what I can do (I have to turn in my form in a week btw)?

  1. I am sorry to hear that you think NHS is BS.  I thought it was indeed an honor and was sorry that there was no chapter at my son's high school--they only had California Scholarship Federation.  That being said, being a member of a club is not normally thought of as leadership unless you are an officer or chair one of the committees.  However, there are other leadership possibilities.  Are you a first chair in band?  If so, that shows leadership over the other students who play the same instrument.  Likewise, the drum major in the marching band is a leadership role.  Do you play any sports (either in school or in local recreational leagues), and if so, have you been the captain or assistant captain of the team? Have you been the chairman of a committee to raise funds, clean up the school, etc.  Have you served as a tutor?  Have you served in any leadership roles in your church (e.g. Sunday School teacher, volunteer in the church nursery, etc.  Have you been an officer in Girl Scouts, 4-H, Campfire, etc.  Do your work?  If so, do you ever serve as shift leader or trainer?

  2. Start a club that serves a purpose, something you are passionate about. It will help you grow by giving back. Just like when someone is very wealthy they give to a charity. You are a gifted student with more choices that most students have. If you can't find something you are passionate about there are ways to help other students like some can't afford class trips or to join certain clubs or some need tutoring just to pass (let alone get into college) . A club like that would be great.  That would look great on your application and you might even enjoy it and not think of it as BS.
