National Rugby League boss David Gallop wants assurance from Sonny Bill Williams
National Rugby League (NRL) boss David Gallop will seek assurance from Sonny Bill Williams that he will not repeat the way he exited from Rugby League mid-way into his contract with Bulldogs in 2008.
The player had played with Bulldogs for seven years before he took up the opportunity with New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU). This move of his was largely criticised because the player terminated his contract with Bulldogs mid-way, in hopes of seeking his future
in the alternate code of rugby. This had greatly angered his fellow playing mates and his fan base alike.
The player however, went ahead with his plan to experience the union games, after paying off heavily in terms of financial compensation. The player was also made to leave on the condition that he will not try to venture back into NRL rival clubs until 2013.
This means that the player still has a year more before he can weave his ties with Sydney Roosters.
While talking about it, Gallop said, “We would always have preferred he played rugby league once he finishes his current contractual obligations both to rugby and under the terms of his settlement with the Bulldogs. We also said before that it would be important
to sit down with him and discuss the events of his departure from the Bulldogs to ensure such a situation is never repeated.”
According to the news in speculation, the player will agree to a multi-million dollar deal at the franchise, Sydney Roosters in 2013 which will bind him at the franchise for next five years. However, it is believed by Nasser that there is no chance of any
deal being made or announced in the next couple of days, not even in the next couple of months.
Williams and Nasser had a meeting set up with Roosters boss Nick Politis and Channel 9 chief executive David Gyngell, which had confirmed the news in speculation about the budding links up between Roosters and Williams.
However, not much has been disclosed about the proceedings of that meeting, when the participants were inquired about its details.
It will be interesting to see how Williams will respond to Gallop’s offer, pertaining to assurance on his part.
