National Rugby League's Round 19
Round 19 was another exciting one in the National Rugby League (NRL) as the teams looked to get very important wins, with only eight games left in the season.
Warriors 16 Storm 6
The Warriors continued their streak, winning a hard fought defensive battle at home this week against the Storm.
James Maloney opened the scoring for the home side just six minutes into the contest with a penalty. Manu Vatuvei added to the lead two minutes later, notching the first try of the match. The Warriors continued their impressive first half play as Jerome Ropati scored another try in the 15th minute.
Scoring did not resume until the 58th minute as Cameron Smith notched a conversion on a Billy Slater try for the Storms’ only points of the day. Maloney would add a field goal in the 77th minute to put the game out of reach.
Eels 34 Panthers 28
The Eels won a try filled affair against the league’s second place side over the weekend, picking up the bonus point for the now 10th placed squad.
The Panthers came out of the gate quickly scoring a try in the 2nd minute. Michael Gordon then got a try and a conversion in the 9th and Lachlan Coote added to the lead with a try of his own in the 14th. The Panthers did not let up as Michael Jennings scored again just six minutes later. The Eels came back late in the half, however, as Fuifui Moimoi and Jonathan Wright scored tries two minutes apart to make the score 22-12 at the break.
The Eels came back stronger in the second half with a quick try from Wright, and a Krisnan Inu score in the 54th minute. Luke Burt notched his fifth convert of the game after the Eels’ Jarryd Hayne tallied the fifth unanswered try in row. Wade Graham finally got the Panthers back on the board, but it was not enough as Justin Horo scored in the final minute to give the Eels the win.
Sea Eagles 48 Sharks 18
The Sea Eagles sunk the struggling Sharks, in what was a display of offensive prowess from the now sixth place squad.
The Eagles led 36-0 after the first half, as Anthony Watmough scored three tries before the 40th minute. The Sea Eagles were able to sit back in the second half, as they focused on defence, the Sharks notched three tries. However, it would never be enough, as Jamie Lyon and Chris Bailey scored twice more for the Sea Eagles, putting away a very one-sided affair.
Raiders 52 Knights 18
In an even more one-sided affair, the Raiders crushed the Knights at home over the weekend. Canberra now sits in 11th position.
It was barely a match as the score was 40-0 after the first half and 52-0 after a Terry Campese try in the 52nd minute. The Knights scored three times afterwards, but it would not nearly be enough. Jarrod Croker had an outstanding game at the tee for the Raiders, not missing a single conversion.
Roosters 36 Bulldogs 32
The Roosters continued what has been a strong campaign for the Sydney side this season with a close victory over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs came out flying, looking to move out of the basement. They had a 24-18 lead at the half. However, the Roosters continued their second half heroics, getting tries from three different players. Todd Carney did not miss any of his six conversions on the day, helping the home team onto a victory.
Wests Tigers 26 Cowboys 16
The Monday night affair was won by the Wests Tigers, as the Perth Squad continues to impress this season.
The Tigers looked out of sorts in the first half, as the Cowboys took a 16-4 lead into the break. The Tigers came back strong, however, adding five tries to the score board and blanking the Cowboys to finish an exciting come from behind victory.
