    Icons : Merlion  & The Miss Vanda Joachim,the national flower of Singapore also known as the Singapore Orchid

    Landmarks : The Esplanade

    Clothing : Malay

    Men : Baju Melayu It is worn especially on Fridays for the Friday prayers.Other than being matched with the "seluar"(trousers),the baju Melayu can also be worn with "kain pelikat".The tanjak or tengkolok,dastar & songkok are some of the traditional Malay headwears for men.



    For Women : For Malay women, the traditional costumes which are most widely worn are the "sarong",the "baju kurung" & the "baju kebaya".Another mandatory piece of clothing is the scarf called either the tudung or selendang.

    These Malay traditional costumes are usually worn during Hari Raya Puasa,Hari Raya Haji,wedding occasions & sometimes visits to relatives.It can also be worn at any time of the day.

    Clothing Indian :

    Men : Most Indian men in Singapore wear their traditional costumes only on special occasions-Indian kurta during Deepavli.However,the men in Singapore are still more comfortable in conventional men's western clothing.

    Women :The sari is actually a single piece of fabric of about a metre in width and 6 yards in length,draped around the body of a woman & tied like a pleated skirt with one end of the fabric thrown over the shoulder.With the sari,the woman wears a chat,a short-fitting blouse.

    Chinese :

    Men : Western clothings.

    Women : Most women,also opted for western clothings.For special occasions,some chinese women will wear Cheongsam or Qipao.Occasions : Chinese New Year or Mooncake festival.

    Traditions :

    Singaporeans go barefoot inside their homes,so to show respect, shoes should be removed when entering their home.

    Chinese

    The Chinese like things in even numbers; 2,6 & 8 are considered lucky numbers.But avoid 4,it is associated with death.

    Red is a very auspicious colour,as are other bright colours.The older generation does not approve of black,especially during festive occasions.

    Ethnic Chinese shake hands.Their grasp is rather light although the handshake itself can be rather prolonged.

    Muslims

    Muslims don't eat pork.If entertaining,ensure any meat is "halal" & that no pork,lard or alcohol is used in the cooking.

    Muslims do not drink alcohol.Don't take wine when visiting a Muslim home & always dress modestly.

    Muslims fast between dawn & dusk during Ramadan.

    Between men,ethnic Malays shake hands.

    Men & women do not traditionally shake hands,since Muslim men do not touch women in public.

    More appropriate to use the 'salaam' (bowing the head) greeting.This is also the greeting to be used when two women meet.

    Hindus

    Hindus don't eat beef.Some are strict vegetarians (as are some Buddhists).

    Ethnic Indians shake hands with members of the same s*x.

    Traditions of SG: Multicultural society: Chinese, Indian and Malay traditions all present in the society, but very westernized.

    It is a country of the commonwealth, there are 1 percent foreigners living in SG.
