i understand that 5 credit hours is 1 promotion point for correspondece courses. but when you do these courses does it have to be according to your mos or can you do any course and get the credit for it?

No you can do the correspondance courses in whatever you want. I took all kinds of correspondences courses that had nothing to do with my MOS. They all counted.
