Does paid babysitting count towards hours needed for community service? Or is it just for if I did it for no pay? I'm about to be a sophomore, and am scrambling together as many extra hours as I can to be accepted.

  1. Paid positions don't typically count for community service.

The idea of community service is that you are volunteering your time and effort (and potentially money) to help those in your community who need help! So while babysitting in a low-income childcare center may count, babysitting your siblings, cousins, or neighbors may not (and certainly not if paid).

A good way to get community service hours any time of the year is to visit a nursing home - just visit with the elderly. Or check in with your local humane society/animal shelter, union gospel mission/food bank, or womens' shelter. Places like those are always looking for extra help and the work isn't usually too bad. A lot of it is just spending time with the people or animals - a little goes a long way in that regard. Aside from the hours, you can really brighten a person's day. Volunteering in elementary schools is fun and looks great on paper - but summer opportunities can be harder to come by.

Most of my NHS hours were from volunteering at a nursing home and at the local blood drive. Basically, just find an organization (non-profits are good!) that you think could use a little help and ask about volunteer opportunities.

    Good luck! :)

  2. I don't think it counts since you were paid.

How about you go clean up garbage in parks and along the street, that would count and your town will be much cleaner! You can ask a friend to help you, they may need the hours too or may just want to help.
