Question:

Native American Background?

by  |  earlier

So I recently found out from my mother that her father was 100% Native American bloodline (I never knew him, he died when my mother was only 3) and this piqued my interest. So I got on the BIA website and they said in order to apply for membership to a tribe I need to trace my genealogical background and provide written record of my family members that belonged to the tribe. I've got all this information and the tribe my Grandfather (and his sons) belonged to was the Cherakawah tribe (it's part of the Cherokee nation) So where do I go from here? The website tells me I need to contact the tribe directly but I have no idea how to do this?

  1. I don't think the Cherokee Nation has anything to do with the "Cherakawah" as the CHIRICAHUA are APACHE and are a totally different tribe.  However, some Chiricahua were taken as prisoners to Oklahoma where the Cherokee also ended up having walked the Trail of Tears.

The contact numbers for the Cherokee Nation can be found at http://www.cherokee.org/ and the contact numbers for the Ft. Sill Apache Tribe are unavailable on the web.  Good luck.

  2. This may be what you are looking for.

Cherakawah (Cheroenhaka - Nottoway} and Cherokee belong to the Iroquoian Language Family.

My people The (northeastern Anishnaabe) call the Iroquois "Nottoway".  I have asked where did the word came from and what it meant. No one could tell me.

We pick a wild mint that we call "Nottoway tea" It is a very calming drink. Often used for special occasions.  Surprising what you learn on Answers.

  3. It looks like you got some good info above and I'll give you some at the bottom of this as well that is relevant to your question.

What I wanted to say was it is fantastic you are pursing this.  If you have more questions about Native culture or specifics you can email me. No matter what tribe you are.   I am Cherokee and Lakota.  I am not enrolled but I am very active in the Native community.

I cannot find anything specifically on the Cherakawah tribe.

Perhaps you spelled it wrong?  If you are sure it is Cherokee then you can pursue the above information.  Using the email link may be the best bet.  The Cherokee tribe is known for their ease of getting enrolled (although its never actually easy).

  4. I googled the word "Cherakawah" and got zero results.  You probably spelled it wrong.  Could you edit your question and spell it correctly so I can try to look it up for you?

  5. Try this site:  accessgenealogy.com.  It has Indian tribe information.

  6. The CHIRICAHUA are NOT part of the Cherokee Nation.  The Chiricahua are one of the bands of the Apache Tribe, who until they were removed, were located in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico..  They have nothing to do with the Cherokee Nation.

When the last of the Chiricahua Apaches surrendered they were all sent to Florida and other places, but they eventually ended up on the Fort Sill Reservation in Oklahoma.  Here is the contact information:

    Fort Sill Apache Tribe

    Route 2, Box 121

    Apache, OK 73006-9644

    405-588-2298 FAX 588-3133

    http://www.fortsillapache.com/component/...

They don't have an official website, and this site doesn't have much information...

If your grandfather was an enrolled member of the Chiricahua then his name will appear on their rolls.  If he does and you have the proof that you are a direct descendant then you have met the requirements for membership.  If your grandfather was full blooded and no other Native blood was introduced into your lineage. IE: your grandmother or father did not have any native blood, then you would be 1/4 or 25% by blood quantum.
