...Native American...?

So.. my dad, was apparently an American Indian. I live with my Mother who is Serbian.. we live in Australia. She has recently started talking to me about my Father. Apparantly hes American Indian, Lakota?

This is very wierd for me, because although I suspected he wasnt European because im a tad darker, I never considered the option of him being an Indian. You just dont hear much about them in Aus outside their 18th centuary context.

I.. wonder... what do I do from here on? Can i consider myself half.. even though i know so little about the culture?

Confused.

  1. I envy you, man. You have a very rich cultural heritage. I did some cultural reviews also about our heritage and found out that Filipinos have Indian roots. But it seems people have better views about American Indians than Indians from India.

  2. If he was full-blood then then assuming your mother has no Lakota ancestry (it seems unlikely) you'd be half-blood.

Would help loads to learn the Lakota language. Much that is very subtle gets lost in translation. Also if you do try to get in contact with people of the tribe/culture it shows you are making an effort to help the culture and not just a "wannabe".

You've also got Serbian cultural routes. I understand that people may find it difficult to deal with because of the ethnic cleansing which occurred in the Balkans, but it is equally valid.

I've a friend who spends a fair bit of time looking into Lakota mythology/has many friends who are Lakota. I'll see if I can get hold of her, and I'll ask her for her for recommendations as to good sources of info. Till then I hope the following site is of some help:-

  3. It depends on if he was a full blooded Lakota or only half? If he's full blooded then that makes you 1/2, if he's only half that makes you 1/4. :D I'm 1/2 chippewa because my mother was full and my father was full polish.

And it doesn't matter how much you know about the culture it's your bloodlines that determine how much Indian you are! :) It's a good thing too because I know little about Chippewa's though I am trying hard to learn. Don't be afraid to google it and chat around, you'll find alot of support and help out there to assist you in learning

    good luck

  4. you are half by blood here is a good place to start learning about your heritage
