Native Arabic speakers, is something wrong with this phrase?

is something wrong about using the [salaam aleykum] phrase as an common greeting?

i remember Egyptians looking rather surprised when i greeted them this way /being a tourist, back in Egypt/. I remember they were using both this phrase and the equivalents of good morning /good evening in their dialogues.
