How about in the word 'apocrine'?

(In case, you don't know what 'apocrine' and 'eccrine' mean, those are the two types of sweat glands).

  1. I think it's ACCEPTABLE, but I was taught that it was pronounced like the 'i' in 'grin.' =/

  2. Yes it is. At least in the Midwest dialect of the US

  3. According to dictionary.com, there are several accepted pronunciations:

  4. Yeah. you can also pronouce it Ek-rin (rhymes with "in") or ek-reen (rhymes with "green")

  5. Some people pronounce them different ways. The two ways are the one you said and then pronouncing the "i" as in the word "in" (a short i). In my opinion, pronouncing the "i" in both of those words as a shorter "i" is more prevalent and sounds better to me! :)

  6. Since there are no "Native English" Speaker on this world, allow me to aid you in your query: eccrine /ec·crine/ (ek´rin) exocrine, with special reference to ordinary sweat glands.

As you can see it is the "e"sound, not the long "i" in pine. Alternative pronunciations can be found here:

    or

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/e...

Through understanding the origin of a word one begins to understand the use. The word stems from Latin, not English.

  7. No, In both words the "I" is pronounced like the "I" in "crib"

  8. Actually no. The "i" is pronounced more like the two "ee"s in green. However, many scientists will pronounce it like the "i" in pine because they have Anglicized the word so it will sound different depending with whom you speak. The issue is the same with words like culinary.  It should be pronounced "kewl-een-a-ree" but many pronounce it "kull-in-a-ree" despite the fact that there is only one "L".
